CAGR calculator
Calculate compound annual growth from starting value, ending value and years. See the formula, an illustrative growth curve and a downloadable result.
Compound annual growth
From 100 to 220 over 3 years. Constant-rate illustration, not actual intermediate observations.
- Total change
- 120%
Formula and method
CAGR = (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1
CAGR is the constant annual rate that would connect a starting value to an ending value through compounding. It smooths the path between the endpoints; it does not describe every actual annual change.
Worked example
From 100 to 220 over 3 years, CAGR is approximately 30.06%. Use the elapsed number of years, not the number of observations: 2021 to 2024 spans three years.
What the result can tell you
The start must be positive, the end nonnegative, and years positive. A zero ending value gives −100%. The curve is a constant-rate illustration, not measured intermediate values or a forecast. CAGR alone does not account for cash flows or explain volatility.
